Description

Domaine Guion is situated right in the heart of the Bourgueil across the river from Chinon, these two appelations making up the Loire Valley’s Cabernet Franc heartland. The Guions began farming here in the 1950s, before synthetic fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides could make inroads, and have resisted the subsequent rising tide of their use. Stephane remarks that “his parents remained faithful to natural techniques in the interest of product quality and life” and he takes this mantle forward in his methods. He took over the vineyard in 1994 when his parents retired after having studied winemaking in Bordeaux. He farms 10Ha of vines, and his commitment to conscientious viticulture and biodynamics saw his achievement of demeter certification in 2021.

This wine comes from the Domaine’s younger vines, planted on a mix of limestone and clay soils. Cuvée Candide is a bright, crunchy, refreshing take on Cabernet Franc, with fine, sandy tannins and a brush of dried Mediterranean herbs on the finish. This really is an all season wine, and is incredibly versatile with food. At 12% it’s also lovely and refreshing on it’s own, with a slight chill even if a sunny afternoon calls for it.
