This month’s wine pack is inspired by the food & the wonderful ingredients coming into season this month.
There is something about all the Spring flowers, the clocks going forward & the abundance of local food available that makes April a very special time of year.
This month’s seasonal highlights will be lamb, spring greens, asparagus, wild garlic, rhubarb, wild leeks, native oysters & wild salmon.
So without further ado, the April pack run down…
Brand Riesling (Germany)- A beautiful Organic German Riesling in the Kabinett Trocken style. Dry but with balancing residual sugar & precise acidity. A bright wine that bursts with fresh lemon & lime notes with some stone fruit. Without doubt this is Spring time sipping, complete with floral label! Fifth-generation winemaker Daniel Brand first brought organic production to his family farm in 2007 & – joined by brother Jonas – started producing wines without added sulphur or chemicals in 2014. This wine’s label screams Spring but we also love how it would match with the seasonal produce, especially wild garlic & wild leeks along with some wild salmon.
Drouhin Chablis (France)- An organic Chablis from a producer we have been championing for nearly 2 years now. Aromatic nose of lemon zest, green apple & white flowers. Well-balanced, fresh & clean on the palate with crisp acidity leading into more citrus fruit on the core & a steely, mineral finish. The grapes for this Chablis come from a 6-hectare plot on the right bank of the Vauvilien Valley that is sandwiched between the Premier Cru vineyards of ‘Mont de Milieu’ and ‘Montee de Tonnerre‘. This wine is a real gem & it was included in this months pack to highlight a famous classic wine region that would also be an amazing & luxurious match for some native oysters if you get the chance this month!
Bon Cote Rouge (France) A blend of Grenache, Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon from Languedoc, France. A medium bodied red wine with lots of red berries, cherries & liquorice. This has a nice earthy slightly funky note on the finish with soft tannins. A real crowdpleaser & everyday red that would go very well with grilled meat & roasted vegetables/charcuterie/tapas. This winery works sustainably, they like to encourage biodiversity in all their vineyards. The grapes are taken off the skins after fermentation to avoid too much tannin extraction & keep lots of fresh fruit flavour.
Hamilton Heights Shiraz (Australia) – Bright ruby red in colour, this Aussie Shiraz is bursting full of inviting blackcurrant & blackberry aromas on the nose. The palate is smooth & soft with juicy black fruit flavours & a hint of the classic Shiraz spicy black pepper. Soft tannnins give structire to this wine that would suit roast lamb dishes & fresh greens.
Roaring Meg Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)- Roaring Meg is the second wine from the lovely folks at Mount Difficulty winery in Central Otago, New Zealand. Their Sauvignon Blanc displays a bouquet of lemon sherbet, with a touch of green pepper & gooseberry. On the palate there is vibrant pink grapefruit. Sauvignon Blanc can be a classic match for fresh steamed asparagus & greens. The acidity & green grassy nature in the wine pairs well with fresh seafood from your local fishmonger & lightly herbal creamy sauces. (We also sourced in the excellent Pinot Noir from this winery too – a great smokey, red berry, earthy bottle we highly recommend)
Moscato D’Asti Olim Bauda (Italy)- Something a little sweet to finish off! This organic sparkling wine is intensely aromatic & shows ripe apple, pineapple & honey aromas. To the palate it is fresh & fragrant, as the sweetness & acidity are properly balanced. The fine mousse makes the fizz feel sightly creamy, with an elegant finish. As rhubarb is now in season, this had to be included in the pack – it would be lovely chilled with a rhubarb fool or sweet treat, even just a fruit salad & ice cream!
There you have it, 6 wines for one great meal or several meals, picnics, BBQ’s & nights in. Some food inspiration included with the wine this month!
We hope you enjoy this months pack. Remember our wine packs include free shipping UK wide, should you wish to gift the April Pack to a loved one.
