Description

Le Galouchey is one of the most idiosyncratic estates in Bordeaux, nestled in the Entre-deux-Mers appellation, but prefers to label its wine as simple Vin de France.

After being hand-harvested at low yields, the fruit is hand-destemmed and co-fermented with wild yeasts, before undergoing elevage in old oak barrels with minimal sulphur dioxide additions. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

In 2002, renowned Paris sommelier Marco Pelletier began working with two friends who had just planted a vineyard in Entre-Deux-Mers with all of Bordeaux’s permitted grape varieties. Farmed organically from day one, their single wine, ‘Vin de Jardin’ (a riposte to the ‘Vins de Garage’ moniker given to so many small Saint-Émilion estates in the 1990s) went on to develop a devoted following among drinkers tired of Bordeaux’s corporate affectations.

Marco has since joined forces with the Gonet family, owners of Champagne Gonet and Château Lesparre in Beychac-and-Caillau. His fruit now comes from two small Gonet-owned plots, also farmed without chemicals and planted with a mix of both red and white varieties – Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Carmenère, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle.

Combining weight, body, and silken texture with incredible freshness and drinkability, ‘Vin de Jardin’ is different in every way to all those identikit Clarets that flood the market.
