Description
This Dun Dearg 5-year-old is an Islay blended malt, made up of two-thirds 5 year old Ardbeg and one-third 15yo Caol Ila.
On the nose it starts with charred Tunnocks wafers (chocolate, caramel, biscuit … but peat-smoked!), smoked olive oil, some honey, tar and roof pitch, beach pebbles, old ropes and cigar boxes. With time it gets more herbal, with lots of citrus oil also popping up.
With water: so clean! Sea water, eucalyptus, pears, heather honey, lemon. The palate starts with big, oily peat, salt and burnt lemon peel, before a chewy development on oranges, tar, dark soy sauce, liquorice root and smoked chocolate cake.
The finish is long and salty, with chunky cigar smoke. With water: so fruity! Lemon drops, pear, oilve oil cake, melon and sweet citrussy smoke.
