Description

This is Rabigato from 20 year old vines planted in a blend of schist and granite soils. Grapes were pressed whole bunch before fermentation in steel tanks, followed by 4 months on the lees then another 4 in stainless steel, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Delicate aromas of white fruit and grapefruit. Full and refreshing on the palate with citrus pith acidity and a long, salty mineral finish.

Folias de Baco (“the madness of Bacchus”) is the project of Tiago Sampaio in Alto Douro, in the sub-region of Cima-Corgo. Growing up in the Douro, Tiago left Portugal for studies in Viticulture and Enology in Oregon, where he picked up on modern philosophies and aesthetics of winemaking, while never forgetting his roots in the Douro. Returning to create his estate in 2007 he’s garnered much attention since, bridging the traditions of his homeland with modern aesthetics to create field blends of red, white and mixed from indigenous varietals planted some 80 years ago. With their bottles often labelled ‘UIVO’ meaning ‘howl’, Folias de Baco encourages biodiversity and wildlife restoration through the use of low intervention, organic and biodynamic principles. Their wines are made with no additions aside from minuscule doses of sulphites added to some wines at the bottling stage.
