Description:
This limited single cask expression from Glen Elgin, bottled by Tri Carragh, offers a vivid combination of Speyside charm and rich port influence. Known for its fruity and malty spirit, Glen Elgin lends itself beautifully to bold cask finishes. After over a decade in traditional oak, the whisky was transferred to a first-fill tawny port barrique for 15 months, adding complexity, depth, and a lush berry-forward profile.
Nose:
Dark chocolate-covered raisins and sticky treacle greet the nose immediately, followed by notes of orange zest and stewed red berries. A few drops of water open up lighter tones of clementine, tropical fruit, and soft floral hints—lavender and heather in particular.
Palate:
Initially warming and full-bodied, the palate delivers layers of cinnamon spice, rich dark treacle, and dried figs. The high ABV gives it strength, but the texture remains silky and waxy. With dilution, the whisky softens to reveal mango, papaya, and subtle vanilla cream, balancing the spice and tannin structure from the port cask.
Finish:
Long, warming, and evolving. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, fruitcake, and floral oak taper into gentle spice and soft tannins, leaving a lasting impression of richness and elegance.
Overall Impression:
This whisky is a showcase of balance between distillery character and bold cask finishing. The port barrique contributes depth and richness without overwhelming the natural fruity malt of Glen Elgin. It’s a dram that rewards time, water, and attention, and will appeal to fans of complex, fruit-driven single malts.
