Preamble.
The first wine is Fattorina Di Sammontana Chianti Superior. This Chianti is made by Daniele & Dario, the fourth generation at this biodynamic Tuscan estate. 100% Sangiovese, from a single plot of the estate’s best vines. It spends one year in old barrels followed by a couple of years in the bottle before release. It’s generous but restrained, has beautiful bright fruit and starting to show some development. Superb.
The second wine is Mirafiore Pietra Magica Langhe. Mirafiore are a Barolo producer primarily but this unique Nebbiolo comes from their organically farmed Langhe vineyards. The twist is the 5 hours resting on Barbera skins to give it a rich Appassimento character. A uniquely full bodied expression of Nebbiolo’s wild strawberry fruit, iron earthy notes, wonderfully vibrant acidity and fine grained tannins, all with the addition of depth and added body from time on the Barbera grape skins.
A wine for those wanting something a little more plush than Barolo would offer.
