Description
A fragrant, high-energy red that buzzes across the palate. Fresh eucalyptus, wild herbs meld with redcurrant, pomegranate, and black cherry. Beneath the fruit lies a spine of minerality – think crushed rocks and cool slate – with an undercurrent of violet and a hint of cocoa. The palate is poised, brimming with bustling acidity and tension. Elegance, yes, but also a touch of wildness – a wine that speaks of the land, the people, and the intention behind its creation.
Melanie Hickman, originally from North America, moved to Rioja Alavesa afer meeting her partner, David Sampedro. There, she combined her love of nature and wine by rescuing and producing single-vineyard wines from old vines. Focused on biodynamic farming and site-specific expression, her work is rooted in sustainability, precision, and a deep connection to the land.
At the heart of Moreno’s philosophy is collaboration – the kind that brings winemakers and importers together to make something truly special. In March 2025 Melanie and David invited the Moreno team taste through a series of tank samples. Our goal: to build a Rioja that buzzes with character and energy. The result is Nalo Meli – a name that means “Honeybee” in Hawaiian, chosen to honour these vital pollinators who represent hard work, community, and harmony with nature.
100% Graciano, sourced from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards at 600 metres above sea level in Rioja Alavesa. The altitude brings freshness and clarity; the vineyard practices bring purity and vibrancy. Fermented in concrete to preserve the grape’s aromatic intensity and structural finesse, Nalo Meli is expressive, and proudly terroir-driven.
Perfect with chuletillas , barbecued and brushed with wild rosemary. Also delicious lightly chilled on a warm evening.
