November has us thinking cosy nights in, slippers on & friends over for dinner. With our cardigans on & our wee shop heater working overtime, we thought we would focus on a big, hearty, food friendly, blustery weather wine pack.
A selection of six wines for those of you that will be making the most of a quieter month before the parties & entertaining kicks into full force, by doing lots of cooking at home.
November is a great month for fish, with everything from cod to langoustine to razor clams (or spoots) in their prime. We’re celebrating autumnul flavours, seasonal food & wines that will compliment these ingredients while also showcasing some brand new bottles made with native grape varieties from Greece, Georgia, Spain & Austria.
The season for wild duck & much other game is in full swing also, so watch out for the shot! Celeriac & chanterelles make for excellent wine companions without the need for meat.
This month’s pack includes:
2 whites, 3 reds & a sparkling.
Capmartin Cosmique (France) – We tried this recently at a wine tasting & thought it would be perfect for the Autumn pack. A biodynamic blend of Viognier, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc & Sauvignon Gris creating an aromatic medium bodied white wine full of pear, white peach & tangy notes making this lively, fresh & supple. A rounder white that would stand up well to richer cooking, spicy food & light game.
Tetramythos Mavro Kalavrytino Natur (Greece) An elegant, perfumed red wine with distinctly Mediterranean flavour profile. Light ruby in the glass, the nose is elegantly aromatic. The wine gives rich flavours of cherry, strawberry and spicy liquorice as well as more smoky, earthy notes. Refreshing on the palate, with gentle tannins and a long attractive finish. A great red wine to enjoy with earthy vegetables, mushrooms & game or something as simple as a Spag Bol.
Campo Flores Organic White (Spain) Old favourite – new label! Campo Flores Verdejo Sauvignon Blanc is wonderfully vibrant & tangy. The Verdejo adds a richer mineral & herbaceous backbone to match the citrus notes from the Sauvignon Blanc. At only 12% alcohol this is a lovely light wine for lunch or mid week. Would be perfect with fish & seafood.
Meinklang Prosa (Austria) – Absolutely charming, in every sense of the word. This sparkling rose is made from a blend of 50% Zweigelt, 20% Pinot Noir, 10% St Laurent & 10% Blaufrankisch. A biodynamic lightly sparkling rosé from Meinklang- a favourite producer in the shop for a long time as we also have red, white & orange wines from this Austrian winery. We think this Prosa is a great bottle to have in the fridge ready for sharing with guests who pop round. Full of strawberry & raspberry flavours without being too sweet so can make a perfect aperitif or to enjoy after dessert!
Alezani Quevri Saperavi Red (Georgia) – Distinguished with a dark ruby colour. Characterized with berry, plum & vanilla aroma. This wine is balanced, with a long luscious finish. Made from Saperavi, a highly pigmented black Georgian grape variety which is fermented & aged in a Qvevri (a traditional vessel that is buried underground). We have been focussing on expanding the wine range from different countries hence why this wine pack has new bottles from Greece & Georgia too.
Azul y Garanza Fiesta Organic Red (Spain) A little charmer to finish things off. Juicy, cherry jam on the nose with raspberry & apricot compote. Super ripe organic Spanish red with a balancing grippy tannin. A well made & well farmed Garnacha red for sipping while cooking and as a lovely starter to the richer Saperavi above.
