STEPHANE BERNAUDEAU LES COQUERIES 2022

Stephane Bernaudeau’s wines enjoy an incredible reputation. His production is very small, farming just 2 hectares in Anjou, which means his exceptional wines are rather hard to come by. Bernaudeau cares little for the Loire’s red grapes, and as such only makes white wine, exclusively from Chenin Blanc. He uses only old oak, and vinifies with no additions apart from a tiny touch of sulphur to provide stability.

This is terrific Chenin Blanc; frankly, as good as it gets. In Anjou, the Loire region that hosts the top Chenin producers, this stands out from the crowd. This wine has opulent ripe orchard fruit and nectarine that sings on the palate with a full, almost creamy, mouthfeel. Lazer-like acidity and pronounced salty mineral tones, however, keep everything in check. Something very special.

CHAVY CHOUET FEMELOTTES BOURGOGNE BLANC 2022

Tipped as Puligny-Montrachet’s ‘domaine to watch’ in the 1980s by Jasper Morris, Romaric Chavy has since taken over his father’s estate and wasted no time in staking a claim as one of Burgundy’s next winemaking stars. Having ended his father’s practice of selling grapes to negociants, and investing in a spacious new winery, Romaric is continually making improvements to Chavy-Chouet’s hugely impressive range. ‘Les Femelottes’ – from a 40-year-old, single vineyard plot lying within Puligny itself – is round and supple in apricot and citrus. This cuvée is very lively. In the mouth, it is supple, fruity, and balanced. Right now, it can be enjoyed in all its freshness, and for a few years to come.

DOMAINE GUFFENS-HEYNEN L’INTERDIT

Colourful Burgundian winemaking legend Jean-Marie Guffens is world-renowned for his Mâcon. But this, his ‘L’Interdit’ (‘forbidden’) wine is so-named as it is grown within the Luberon appellation but as a Chardonnay, thus it can only be labelled as a humble Vin de France. Burgundian in style, it has vibrant aromas of jasmine and orange blossom leading to pillowy stone-fruit flavours plus vanilla, a kiss of oak and a whisper of savoury miso – all kept in line by refreshing acidity.
