Description

The Valmengaux En Jarre is Merlot dominant, supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). Most unusually, this wine is unfiltered and subsequently aged for 12 months in large Tuscan clay amphora (jars). In the glass, the En Jarre is dark bright in hue with a purple tint. The nose is expressive with blackcurrant and raspberry. It has fresh and supple entry, and mouth-filling and round tannins, with a long finish and subtle bitterness.

It was in 2000 that a husband and wife duo created Domaine de Valmengaux, a small winery on the gentle slopes of Vérac besides Fronsac on Bordeaux`s Right Bank. From 30 to 70-year-old-vines, they have been working diligently to farm their four hectare estate with the utmost of care and attention. Although they practiced organic viticulture from day one, it was only in 2012 that they applied and obtained certification. David and Valérie Vallet – a couple who fell for a life among the vines – have been maintaining these practices and the wines style since they took over Domaine de Valmengaux in 2017. The blend remains 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine is aged for 18 to 24 months in foudres (large wooden vats), oak barrels or 12 months in 500/900-litre earthenware jars, which provide a unique patina.
