Viñedos do Gabián is a new project from Raul Perez’s long-time assistant winemaker Jose Pereiro Lopez-Quecuty (Pepiño for short). Pepiño planted 3 heactares of Brancellao and Caíño Longo in 2011 in an amphitheatre-style vineyard named O Gabián in Carballeda de Avia. For now only a portion of that estate fruit is being bottled, he also buys grapes from local growers, but as the roots dig deeper into the granitic sand it’s only going to get better. Farming is organic without certification, and the winemaking is traditional – grapes are fermented whole cluster by plot, and the wines were aged separately and then blended. The result is a juicy aromatic wine with rie and elegant tannins.
