Description

A complex and layered Pinot Noir from winemaker Istvan Bencze in Hungary. Stewed, ripe red berry notes wih a herbal edge, earthy at first with incredible balance and delicate tannin.

The grapes for this special ‘Atlas’ cuvée have been carefully selected from the upper parts of the vineyard. Only the best bunches were used that were crushed as a whole by feet straight away. During the fermented in open vats for 10 days the cap was gently punched down by hand and feet twice a day for a moderate extraction. Transferred by gravity to a 2500L oak barrel where it stays on the lees for 10 month. Bottled unfined, unfiltered without the addition of SO2.

In the cellar, István likes to take a step back and let the wines ferment spontaneously mainly in amphoras. He prefers not to use any additives in order to preserve the original personality of the varieties and the unique minerality of the volcanic soil.

The main goal at Bencze Birtok is to make wines that show the most of their terroir. István believes that the most essential moment is the picking time. It often happens that a wine is a result of five different harvest dates in order to achieve the desired balance.
