Juanjo Tellaetxe (a priest by “day”) tends his family’s 5 hectares in Artomaña, a small town in Valle de Arrastaria, 45km south-east of Bilbao. Surrounded by mountains protecting the vines from most of the cool northern winds he is working mainly Hondarabbi Zuri with a little Petit Corbu, Riesling, Chardonnay (and Hondarabbi Beltza for his very limited red bottling) he is producing very, very good Txakoli. Mostly raised in stainless steel with a few experiments with old barrels these wines are beautifully pure and alive with a complexity demanding that they are not just poured from a height into tumblers!
